And Jehovah your God will clear away those nations before you little by little; you shall not prevail to destroy them all at once, lest the beasts of the field become too numerous for you.

As for the Jebusites, the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the sons of Judah could not drive them out; but the Jebusites dwell with the children of Judah at Jerusalem to this day.

And they did not drive out the Canaanites who dwelt in Gezer; but the Canaanites dwell in the midst of Ephraim to this day and are serving under tribute.

Yet the sons of Manasseh could not dispossess those cities, but the Canaanites were determined to dwell in that land.

And it happened, when the sons of Israel grew strong, that they put the Canaanites to tribute, but did not drive them out to dispossess them.

Now these are the nations which Jehovah left, that He might test Israel by them, that is, all who had not known any of the wars in Canaan

namely, five lords of the Philistines, all the Canaanites, the Sidonians, and the Hivites who dwelt in Mount Lebanon, from Mount Baal Hermon to the entrance of Hamath.
