In the first year of his reign, in the first month, he opened the doors of the house of Jehovah and repaired them.

In the eighteenth year of his reign, when he had purged the land and the house, he sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, Maaseiah the governor of the city, and Joah the son of Joahaz the recorder, to repair the house of Jehovah his God.

And when they came to Hilkiah the high priest, they delivered the money that was brought into the house of God, which the Levites who kept the doors had gathered from the hand of Manasseh and Ephraim, from all the remnant of Israel, from all Judah and Benjamin, and the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

And Jehoash said to the priests, All the money of the consecrated things that are brought into the house of Jehovah, each man's poll tax money, each man's valuation money, and all the money that a man purposes in his heart to bring into the house of Jehovah;

let the priests take it themselves, each from his acquaintance; and let them repair the breaches of the house, wherever any breach is found.

But it was so, by the twenty-third year of King Jehoash, that the priests had not repaired the breaches of the house.

So King Jehoash summoned Jehoiada the priest and the other priests, and said to them, Why have you not repaired the breaches of the house? Now therefore, do not take more money from your acquaintances, but give it for repairing the breaches of the house.
