Now the Levites were numbered from the age of thirty years and above; and the head count of the men was thirty-eight thousand.

Of these, twenty-four thousand were to oversee the work of the house of Jehovah, six thousand officers and judges,

four thousand gatekeepers, and four thousand for praising Jehovah with instruments, which I have made, said David, to give praise.

There were more chief men found of the sons of Eleazar than of the sons of Ithamar, and thus they were divided. Among the sons of Eleazar were sixteen chief men of their fathers' houses, and eight heads of their fathers' houses among the sons of Ithamar.
