And he looked toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the plain; and he saw, and behold, the smoke of the land went up like the smoke of a furnace.

because he did not know what to say, for they were greatly afraid.

And the man knew Eve his wife, and she conceived and bore Cain, and said, I have acquired a man from Jehovah.

There were giants on the earth in those days. And also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men and they bore children to them, these were the mighty men from antiquity, men of renown.

And Sarai said to Abram, See now, Jehovah has restrained me from bearing. Please, go in to my maid; perhaps I shall build up a family by her. And Abram heeded the voice of Sarai.

And he went in to Hagar, and she conceived. And when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

And Judah said to Onan, Go in to your brother's wife and marry her, and raise up seed to your brother.

But Onan knew that the heir would not be his; and it came to pass, when he went in to his brother's wife, that he spoiled it on the ground, so as not to give seed to his brother.

And she took off her widow's garments, covered herself with a veil and wrapped herself, and sat in an open place which was on the way to Timnah; for she saw that Shelah was grown, and she was not given to him as a wife.

And he turned aside to her by the way, and said, Please let me come in to you; for he did not know that she was his daughter-in-law. So she said, What will you give me, that you may come in to me?

And he said, What pledge shall I give you? So she said, Your signet ring and cord, and your staff that is in your hand. And he gave them to her, and went in to her, and she conceived by him.

And Judah sent the young goat by the hand of his friend the Adullamite, to receive his pledge from the woman's hand, but he did not find her.

So he returned to Judah and said, I have not found her. Also, the men of the place said there was no harlot there.

And it came to pass, after about three months, that Judah was told, saying, Tamar your daughter-in-law has played the harlot; furthermore she is with child by prostitution. So Judah said, Bring her out and let her be burned!

And Judah acknowledged them and said, She has been more righteous than I, because I did not give her to Shelah my son. And he never knew her again.

And so it was, when she was giving birth, that the one put out his hand; and the midwife took a scarlet thread and tied it on his hand, saying, This one came out first.

And afterward out came his brother who had the scarlet thread on his hand. And his name was called Zerah.

If brothers dwell together, and one of them dies and has no son, the widow of the dead man shall not be married to a strange man outside the family; her husband's brother shall go in to her, take her as his wife, and perform the duty of a husband's brother to her.

And in that day seven women shall take hold of one man, saying, We will eat our own bread and wear our own clothing; only let us be called by your name, to take away our reproach.
