And these are the nations which the Lord left, that He might test Israel by them, [that is,] all that had not known the wars of Canaan.

The five lordships of the Philistines, and every Canaanite, and the Sidonian, and the Hivite who dwelt in Lebanon from the mount of Hermon to Hamath.

And it came to pass after these things that God tested Abraham, and said to him, Abraham, Abraham; and he said, Behold! I am here.

And you shall remember all the way which the Lord your God has led you in the wilderness, that He might afflict you, and try you, and that the things in your heart might be made manifest, whether you would keep His commandments or not.

who fed you with manna in the wilderness, which you knew not, and your fathers knew not; that He might afflict you, and thoroughly test you, and do you good in your latter days.

you shall not hearken to the words of that prophet, or the dreamer of that dream, because the Lord your God is testing you, to see whether you love your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

Notwithstanding, in regard to the ambassadors of the princes of Babylon, who were sent to him, to inquire of him [concerning] the wonders which came upon the land, the Lord left him, to test him, to know what was in his heart.

For He already knows my way, and He has tried me as gold.

For You, O God, have proved us; You have tried us with fire as silver is tried.

As silver and gold are tried in a furnace, so are choice hearts with the Lord.

And who will abide the day of His coming? Or who will withstand at His appearing? For He is coming in as the fire of a furnace and as the herb of fullers.

He shall sit to melt and purify as it were silver, and as it were gold: and He shall purify the sons of Levi, and refine them as gold and silver, and they shall offer to the Lord an offering in righteousness.
