It is necessary, therefore, for a bishop to be irreproachable, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, well-behaved, hospitable, skillful at teaching;

one ruling his own house well, having [his] children in submission with all reverence;

not a new convert, lest being puffed up [with pride] he fall into [the same] condemnation as the devil.

They shall not take a woman who is a harlot and profaned, or a woman put away from her husband; for he is holy to the Lord his God.

But a widow, or one that is put away, or profaned, or a harlot, these he shall not take; but he shall take for a wife a virgin of his own people.

Neither shall they take to themselves a widow for a wife, or one that is put away, but a virgin of the seed of Israel. But if there should happen to be a priest's widow, they shall take [her].

And did he not do well? And [there was] the residue of his spirit. But you said, What does God seek but a seed? But take heed to your own spirit, and forsake not the wife of your youth.

There was in the days of Herod, the king of Judea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the division of Abijah. His wife was of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elizabeth.

Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children well, and their own houses.

For I know that he will order his sons, and his house after him, and they will keep the ways of the Lord, to do justice and judgment, that the Lord may bring upon Abraham all things whatsoever He has spoken to him.

and departed to Ramathaim. And the child ministered in the presence of the Lord before Eli the priest.

And Eli was very old, and he heard what his sons did to the children of Israel.

Therefore why have you looked upon My incense offering and My grain offering with a shameless eye, and have honored your sons above Me, so that they should bless themselves with the firstfruits of every sacrifice of Israel before Me?

Therefore thus says the Lord God of Israel: I said, Your house and the house of your father shall pass before Me forever: but now the Lord says, Far be it from Me; for I will only honor them that honor Me, and he that despises Me shall be despised.

In that day I will raise up against Eli all things that I have said against his house; I will begin, and I will make an end.

And I have told him that I will be avenged on his house perpetually for the iniquities of his sons, because his sons spoke evil against God, and he did not admonish them.

(for if one does not know how to rule his own house, how will he take care of the church of God?);

A wise son keeps the law, but he that keeps up debauchery dishonors his father.

For there are also many insubordinate, both idle talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision,

Now we exhort you, brothers, admonish the disorderly, encourage the discouraged, be supportive of the weak, be patient toward all.
