And he said, "Men, brothers and fathers, listen: The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran,

Then he went forth from the land of the Chaldeans and settled down in Haran. And from there, after his father was dead, He moved him to this land in which you now dwell.

But God spoke in this way: that his offspring would dwell in a foreign land, and that they would enslave them, and they would treat them badly four hundred years.

Then He gave him the covenant of circumcision; and so Abraham begot Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot the twelve patriarchs.

and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt; and he made him ruler over Egypt and all his house.

And Jacob, hearing that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.

Then Joseph sent and summoned his father Jacob and all his relatives, seventy-five people.

And they were brought back to Shechem, and were placed in the tomb which Abraham bought for a price of silver from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem.

until there arose a different king, who did not know Joseph.

At this time Moses was born, and he was well pleasing to God; who was brought up in his father's house for three months.

And Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was mighty in words and deeds.

And seeing someone being wronged, he retaliated, and avenged him who was being oppressed, and struck the Egyptian.

And on the next day he appeared to them as they were fighting, and [tried to] reconcile them to peace, saying, 'Men, you are brothers; why do you wrong one another?'

'Do you desire to kill me in the way that you did the Egyptian yesterday?'

And forty years having been fulfilled, an Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire in a bush, in the wilderness of Mount Sinai.

saying, 'I am the God of your fathers--the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' And Moses was trembling and was not bold enough not look closely.

"I have certainly seen the mistreatment of My people in Egypt; I have heard their groaning and I have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt."'

He led them out, and did wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

This is he who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the Angel who was speaking to him on Mount Sinai, and [with] our fathers, the one who received the living oracles to give to us,

saying to Aaron, 'Make for us gods who will go before us; as for this Moses who led us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him.'

But God turned away and gave them over to serve the host of heaven, just as it is written in the book of the Prophets: 'Did you offer Me slaughtered animals and sacrifices during forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

"The tabernacle of the testimony was with our fathers in the wilderness, just as the One speaking to Moses commanded him, to make it according to the pattern that he had seen,

who found favor before God and asked [opportunity] to find a dwelling place for the God of Jacob.

However, the Most High does not dwell in handmaid sanctuaries, just as the prophet says:

Did not My hand make all these things?'

Which of the prophets did your fathers not persecute? And they killed those who foretold about the coming of the Righteous One, of whom you have now become betrayers and murderers,

And the Lord said to Abram, Go forth out of your land, and out from your family, and out of the house of your father, into the land which I will show you.

And I will bless those that bless you, and curse those that curse you, and in you shall all the tribes of the earth be blessed.

And I will establish My covenant between you and your seed after you, to their generations, for an everlasting covenant, to be your God, and the God of your seed after you.

And I will give to you and to your seed after you the land in which you sojourn, even all the land of Canaan for an everlasting possession, and I will be to them a God.

Because He loved your fathers, He also chose you, their seed, after them, and He brought you Himself out of Egypt with His great strength,

For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; and the Lord your God chose you to be to Him a peculiar people beyond all nations that [are] upon the face of the earth.

But because the Lord has loved you, and He is keeping the oath which He swore to your fathers; the Lord has brought you out with a strong hand, and the Lord has redeemed you from the house of bondage, out of the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

Not for your righteousness, nor for the holiness of your heart, do you go in to inherit their land, but because of the wickedness of these nations, the Lord shall destroy them from before you, and that He may establish the covenant, which the Lord swore to our fathers, to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

For you are a holy people to the Lord your God, and the Lord your God has chosen you to be a peculiar people to Himself of all the nations on the face of the earth.

You are the Lord God, You chose Abram, and brought him out of the land of the Chaldeans, and gave him the name of Abraham.

And You found his heart faithful before You, and made a covenant with him to give to him and to his seed the land of the Canaanites, the Hittites, the Amorites, the Perizzites, the Jebusites, and the Girgashites; and You have confirmed Your words, for You [are] righteous.

[you] seed of Abraham, His servants, [you] children of Jacob, His elect.

He has remembered His covenant forever, the word which He commanded for a thousand generations;

And He established it to Jacob for an ordinance, and to Israel for an everlasting covenant;

when they were few in number, very few, and sojourners in it.

For the Lord has chosen Jacob for Himself, [and] Israel for His peculiar treasure.

But you, O Israel, are My servant Jacob, and he whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham, whom I have loved;

whom I have taken hold of from the ends of the earth, and from the high places of it I have called you, and said to you, You are My servant; I have chosen you, and I have not forsaken you.

But now hear, O Jacob My servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's [own] possession, that you may proclaim the excellent virtues of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;

Now when the time of the promise drew near which God swore to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt,

And the children of Israel increased and multiplied, and became numerous and grew exceedingly strong, and the land multiplied them.

And he said to his nation, Behold, the race of the children of Israel is a great multitude, and is stronger than we!

With seventy souls your fathers went down into Egypt; but the Lord your God has made you as the stars of heaven in multitude.

Israel also came into Egypt, and Jacob sojourned in the land of Ham.

And He increased His people greatly, and made them stronger than their enemies.

He led them out, and did wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and at the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

And the Lord said to Moses, Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh; for he shall send them forth with a mighty hand, and with a high arm shall he cast them out of his land.

And I appeared to Abraham and Isaac and Jacob, being their God, but I did not manifest My name LORD to them.

And I heard the groaning of the children of Israel (the affliction with which the Egyptians enslave them) and I remembered the covenant with you.

And I will take you to Me as a people unto Myself, and I will be your God; and you shall know that I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from the tyranny of the Egyptians.

And Moses spoke thus to the sons of Israel, and they hearkened not to Moses, on account of [their] faint-heartedness, and for their hard tasks.

Go in, speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt, that he send forth the children of Israel out of his land.

And the Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron, and gave them a charge to Pharaoh king of Egypt, that he should send forth the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt.

Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to God, and spoke, saying, Let us sing to the Lord, for He is very greatly glorified: horse and rider He has thrown into the sea.

The Lord brings wars to nought, the Lord is His name.

He covered them with the sea: they sank to the depth like a stone.

And in the abundance of Your glory You have broken the adversaries to pieces: You sent forth Your wrath, it devoured them as stubble.

The enemy said, I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoils; I will satisfy my soul, I will destroy with my sword, my hand shall have dominion.

Who is like You among the gods, O Lord? Who is like You? Glorified in holiness, marvelous in glories, doing wonders.

You have guided in Your righteousness this Your people whom You have redeemed, by Your strength You have called them into Your holy resting place.

Then the princes of Edom, and the chiefs of the Moabites hastened; trembling took hold upon them, all the inhabitants of Canaan melted away.

Bring them in and plant them in the mountain of their inheritance, in Your prepared habitation, which You, O Lord, have prepared; the sanctuary, O Lord, which Your hands have made ready.

For the horse of Pharaoh went in with the chariots and horsemen into the sea, and the Lord brought upon them the water of the sea, but the children of Israel walked through dry land in the midst of the sea.

And Miriam led them, saying, Let us sing to the Lord, for He has been very greatly glorified: the horse and rider has He cast into the sea.

For now I know that the Lord is great above all gods, because of this, wherein they attacked them.

But God took you, and led you forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be to Him a people of inheritance, as it is this day.

[Or] did God [ever] try to go and take for Himself a nation out of the midst of [another] nation by trials, by signs, by wonders, by war, by a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, and by great sights, according to all the things which the Lord our God did in Egypt in your sight?

the great trials which your eyes have seen, those signs and great wonders, the strong hand and the outstretched arm; how the Lord your God brought you forth: so the Lord your God will do to all the nations, whom you fear in their presence.

Woe to us, O Lord, deliver us today, for such a thing has not happened before. Woe to us; who shall deliver us out of the hand of these mighty gods? These are the gods that struck Egypt with every plague, and in the wilderness.

And You saw the affliction of our fathers in Egypt, and You heard their cry at the Red Sea.

And You divided the sea before them, and they passed through the midst of the sea on dry land; and You cast them that were about to pursue them into the deep, as a stone into the mighty waters.

O God, Your way is in the sanctuary; who is a great God as our God?

You have redeemed Your people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph, with Your outstretched arm. Pause.

[There was] an abundant sound of waters; the clouds uttered a voice; for Your arrows went abroad.

Your way is in the sea, and Your paths in many waters, and Your footsteps cannot be known.

the miracles which He did before their fathers, in the land of Egypt, in the plain of Zoan.

He divided the sea, and led them through; He made the waters to stand as [in] a bottle.

They remembered not His hand, the day in which He delivered them from the hand of the oppressor.

and had changed their rivers into blood, and their streams, that they should not drink.

And He gave their fruit to the canker worm, and their labors to the locust.

And He gave up their cattle to hail, and their substance to the fire.

He made a way for His wrath; He spared not their souls from death, but consigned their cattle to death;

And He removed His people like sheep; He led them as a flock in the wilderness.

He sent forth Moses His servant, [and] Aaron whom He had chosen.

He sent forth darkness, and made it dark; yet they rebelled against His words.

Their land produced frogs abundantly, in the chambers of their kings.

He turned their rain into hail, [and sent] flaming fire in their land.

He spoke, and the locust came, and caterpillars innumerable,

He smote also every firstborn of their land, the firstfruits of all their labor.

Egypt rejoiced at their departing; for the fear of them fell upon them.

Our fathers in Egypt understood not Your wonders, and remembered not the multitude of Your mercy; but provoked [Him] as they went up by the Red Sea.

And He rebuked the Red Sea, and it was dried up; so He led them through the deep as through the wilderness.

The water covered those that oppressed them; there was not one of them left.

Alleluia. At the going forth of Israel from Egypt, of the house of Jacob from a barbarous people,

The sea saw and fled; Jordan was turned back.

What [ailed] you, O sea, that you fled? And you, O Jordan, that you were turned back?

The earth trembled at the presence of the Lord, at the presence of the God of Jacob;

Who struck the firstborn of Egypt, both of man and beast.

Who struck many nations, and slew mighty kings;

To Him who struck Egypt with their firstborn; for His mercy [endures] forever.

with a strong hand, and an outstretched arm; for His mercy [endures] forever.

and brought Israel through the midst of it; for His mercy [endures] forever;

out of all their affliction; not an ambassador, nor a messenger, but [He H]imself saved them, because He loved them and spared them; He Himself redeemed them, and took them up, and lifted them up all the days of old.

Then he remembered the days of old, [saying], Where is He that brought up from the sea the shepherd of the sheep? Where is He that put His Holy Spirit in them?

He led them through the deep, as a horse through the wilderness, and they fainted not,

who has wrought signs and wonders in the land of Egypt even to this day, and in Israel, and among the inhabitants of the earth; and You made for Yourself a name, as it is this day;

and You brought out Your people Israel out of the land of Egypt with signs, and with wonders, with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with great sights;

And I brought you up out of the land of Egypt, and led you about in the desert forty years, that you should inherit the land of the Amorites.

For I brought you up out of the land of Egypt, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, and sent before you Moses, and Aaron, and Miriam.

And according to the days of your departure out of Egypt shall you see marvelous [things].

The nations shall see and be ashamed; and at all their might they shall lay their hands upon their mouth, their ears shall be deafened.
