On the next day, which is after the Preparation [Day], the chief priests and Pharisees were gathered together to Pilate,

Now it was the Preparation [Day] of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, "Behold your King!"

Therefore the Jews, since it was the Preparation [Day], that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and they might be taken away.

So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews' Preparation Day, because the tomb was near.
