Luke 7:28-35
28
"For I say to you, among those born of women there is not a greater prophet than John the Baptist; but he who is least in the kingdom of God is greater [than] he."
29
And when all the people heard Him, even the tax collectors justified God, having been baptized with the baptism of John.
30
But the Pharisees and lawyers rejected the counsel of God for themselves, because they had not been baptized by him.
31
"Therefore to what shall I compare the men of this generation, and what are they like?
32
They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling to one another, saying: 'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we mourned for you, and you did not weep.'
33
"For John the Baptist has come neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, 'He has a demon.'
34
The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'
35
And so wisdom is justified by all her children."
Matthew 11:7-19

Now as these men were going, Jesus began to say to the crowds concerning John: "What did you go out into the wilderness to see? A reed shaken by the wind?
8
But what did you go out to see? A man clothed in soft garments? Indeed, those who wear soft garments are in kings' houses.
9
But what did you go out to see? A prophet? Yes, I say to you, and far more [than] a prophet.
10
For this is he about whom it is written: 'Behold, I send My messenger before Your face, who will prepare Your way before You.'

"Assuredly I say to you, among [those] born of women there has not risen one greater than John the Baptist; but he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.

And from the days of John the Baptist until now the kingdom of heaven suffers violence, and violent men seize it.

For all the prophets and the law prophesied until John.
14
And if you are willing to receive it, he is Elijah, the [one] who is about to come.

He who has ears to hear, let him hear!
16
But to what shall I compare this generation? It is similar to children who sit in the marketplaces and call to their playmates,

Jesus answered and said to them, " Elijah truly does come first, and shall restore all things.

The baptism of John--where was it from? From heaven or from men?" And they were arguing among themselves, saying, "If we say, 'From heaven,' He will say to us, 'Why then did you not believe him?'

"But if we should say, 'From men,' we fear the crowd, for all consider John as a prophet."

So they answered Jesus and said, "We do not know." And He said to them, "Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

"But what do you think? A man had two children. And having come to the first, he said, 'Child, go, work today in my vineyard.'

"But he answered and said, 'I will not,' but later he regretted it and went.
30
And having come to the other, he said likewise. And he answered and said, 'I [am going], sir,' but he did not go.
31
Which of the two did the will of his father?" They said to Him, "The first." Jesus said to them, "Assuredly I say to you, that tax collectors and harlots enter the kingdom of God before you.
32
For John came to you in the way of righteousness, and you did not believe him; but tax collectors and harlots believed him; but you, having seen, did not repent afterwards, that you might believe him.

And this is the testimony of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem so that they might ask him, "Who are you?"

He confessed, and did not deny, but confessed, "I am not the Messiah."

And they asked him, "What then? Are you Elijah?" He said, "I am not." "Are you the Prophet?" And he answered, "No."

Then they said to him, "Who are you, that we may give an answer to those who sent us? What do you say about yourself?"
23
He said: "I am 'The voice of one crying in the wilderness: "Make straight the way of the LORD," ' just as Isaiah the prophet said."

Now those who had been sent were from the Pharisees.

And they asked him, saying, "Why then do you baptize if you are not the Christ, nor Elijah, nor the Prophet?"

John answered them, saying, "I baptize with water, but there stands One among you whom you do not know.
27
He is the [One] who comes after me, who has come to be before me, of whom I am not worthy that I should loose the strap of His sandal."

These things happened in Bethany, beyond the Jordan, where John was baptizing.
