The Son of Man has come eating and drinking, and you say, 'Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners!'

Then one of the Pharisees asked Him to eat with him. And entering into the Pharisee's house, He reclined [to eat].

And as He spoke, a certain Pharisee asked that He would eat with him. And having entered, He reclined [to eat].

For being free from all [men], I have made myself a servant to all, in order that I might win the more;

to those outside the law, as [one] outside the law (not being outside the law toward God, but subject to [the] law toward Christ), in order that I might win those outside the law;

Now there was a man of the Pharisees whose name [was] Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

Then someone in the council stood up, a Pharisee named Gamaliel, a teacher of the law held in honor by all the people, and commanded them to put the apostles outside for a short time.

And the scribes and Pharisees were observing if whether He would heal on the Sabbath, that they might find an accusation against Him.

And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be dreadfully hostile, and to cross-examine Him about many things,

lying in wait for Him, and seeking to catch Him in something He might say, so that they might accuse Him.

And having watched [Him] closely, they sent spies who pretended to be righteous, that they might seize on His words, in order to deliver Him to the rule and the authority of the governor.

The sinner watches the righteous, and seeks to slay him.

And if he came to see [me], his heart spoke vainly; he gathered iniquity to himself; he went forth and spoke in like manner.

They only took counsel to set at nought my honor. I ran in thirst; with their mouth they blessed, but with their heart they cursed. Pause.

They have set up for themselves an evil matter, they have given counsel to hide snares; they have said, Who shall see them?

They have searched out iniquity; they have wearied themselves with searching diligently, a man shall approach and the heart is deep,

so he eats and drinks as if anyone should swallow a hair, and do not bring him in to yourself, nor eat your morsel with him;

The lawless man has been brought down, and the proud man has perished, and they that transgress mischievously have been utterly destroyed;

and they that cause men to sin by a word; and men shall make all that reprove in the gates an offense, because they have unjustly turned aside the righteous.

For I have heard the reproach of many gathering round, [saying], Conspire, and let us conspire together against him, [even] all his friends. Watch his intentions, if perhaps he shall be deceived, and we shall prevail against him, and we shall be avenged on him.

But the Lord was with me as a mighty man of war; therefore they persecuted [me], but could not perceive [anything against me.] They were greatly confounded, for they perceived not their disgrace, which shall never be forgotten.

And they were observing Him, whether He would heal him on the Sabbath, so that they might accuse Him.
