Then the Pharisees and Sadducees came, and testing [Him], they asked Him to show them a sign out of heaven.

And they sent their disciples to Him with the Herodians, saying, "Teacher, we know that You are true, and teach the way of God in truth; nor do You show favoritism to anyone.

But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said, "Why do you test Me, [you] hypocrites?

And some Pharisees approached and asked Him, "Is it lawful for a husband to put away his wife?" testing Him.

Then they sent to Him some of the Pharisees and the Herodians, in order that they might catch Him in [His] discourse.

Should we give, or should we not give?" But He, knowing their hypocrisy, said to them, "Why do you test Me? Bring Me a denarius, that I may see it."

And as He said these things to them, the scribes and the Pharisees began to be dreadfully hostile, and to cross-examine Him about many things,

lying in wait for Him, and seeking to catch Him in something He might say, so that they might accuse Him.

But this they said, testing Him, that they might have an accusation against Him. But Jesus, stooping down, began to write on the ground with His finger, not taking notice.

Where your fathers tested Me, they tried Me, and saw My works forty years.

"Furthermore it has been said, 'Whoever divorces his wife, let him give her a divorce certificate.'

"But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife, except for a matter of sexual immorality, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorcee commits adultery.

Yet you said, For what reason? Because the Lord has borne witness between you and the wife of your youth, whom you have forsaken, and yet she was your partner, and the wife of your covenant.

But if you should hate [your wife] and put her away, says the Lord God of Israel, then ungodliness shall cover your thoughts, says the Lord Almighty: therefore take heed to your own spirit, and forsake them not,
