And the book of Isaiah the prophet was given to Him. And having unrolled the scroll, He found the place where it was written:

"The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed;

To preach the acceptable year of the LORD."

And having rolled up the scroll, when He had given [it] to the attendant, He sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were looking intently at Him.

And He began to say to them, "Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your ears."
22
And all were bearing witness to Him, and were marveling at the gracious words which came out of His mouth. And they said, "Is this not Joseph's son?"

He said to them, "You will surely say this proverb to Me, 'Physician, heal yourself! Whatever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in Your hometown.'"

Then He said, "Assuredly I say to you, no prophet is accepted in his hometown.
25
But I tell you truly, [there] were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, and there was a great famine all over the land;
26
but to none of them was Elijah sent except to Zarephath, in the region of Sidon, to a widow woman.
27
And [there] were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet, and none of them was cleansed except Naaman the Syrian."
28
So all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with wrath,
29
and rising up they threw Him out of the city; and brought Him to the brow of the hill on which their city was built, in order to throw Him down.

But having passed through the midst of them, He went on.

But when the Jews spoke in opposition, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar, not that I had anything of which to accuse my nation.

Therefore for this reason I have requested you, to see and to speak to you, for because of the hope of Israel I am wearing this chain."

Then they said to him, "We neither received letters from Judea concerning you, nor have any of the brothers who arrived report or speak anything evil about you.

But we request to hear from you the things which you think; for concerning this sect, it is known to us that everywhere it is spoken against."

And having appointed for him a day, many came to him at his house, to whom he was explaining and solemnly testifying to the kingdom of God, and persuading them of the things concerning Jesus from both the Law of Moses and from the Prophets, from morning till evening.

And some were persuaded by the things being said, but others refused to believe.

And being in disagreement with one another, they went away after Paul had said one word: "The Holy Spirit spoke rightly through Isaiah the prophet to our fathers,

saying, 'Go to this people and say: "Hearing you will hear, and by no means understand; and seeing you shall see, and by no means perceive;
27
For the hearts of this people has become dull. Their ears are hard of hearing, and their eyes have closed, lest they should see with their eyes and they should hear with their ears, lest they should understand with their heart and turn back, so that I should heal them."'
28
"Therefore let it be known to you that the salvation of God has been sent to the Gentiles, and they will hear it!"

And when he had said these things, the Jews went away, having a great dispute among themselves.
