And he came to Gedaliah, to Mizpah, and dwelt among his people that was left in the land.

And all the Jews that were in Moab, and among the children of Ammon, and those [that were] in Edom, and those [that were] in all [the rest of] the country, heard that the king of Babylon [had] granted a remnant to Judah, and that he had appointed over them Gedaliah the son of Ahikam.

And they came to Gedaliah into the land of Judah, to Mizpah, and gathered grapes, and very much summer fruit, and oil.

and said to him, Do you indeed know that King Baalis son of Ammon has sent Ismael to you, to kill you? But Gedaliah did not believe them.

Now it came to pass in the seventh month that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah the son of Elishama of the royal family came, and ten men with him, to Gedaliah to Mizpah. And they ate bread there together.

and all the Jews that were with him in Mizpah, and all the Chaldeans that were found there.

that there came men from Shechem, and from Shiloh, and from Samaria, eighty men, having their beards shaven, and their clothes torn, and beating their breasts, and [they had] manna and frankincense in their hands, to bring into the house of the Lord.

And it came to pass, when they had entered into the midst of the city, [that] he killed them [and cast them] into a pit.

Now the pit into which Ishmael cast all whom he killed is the great pit, which King Asa had made for fear of Baasha king of Israel. Ismael filled this with the slain.

And Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the leaders of the army that were with him, heard of all the evil deeds which Ishmael had done.

And it came to pass, that when all the people that were with Ishmael saw Johanan, and the leaders of the army that were with him,

But Ishmael escaped with eight men and went to the children of Ammon.

And all the captains of the army, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had [thus] appointed Gedaliah; and they came to Gedaliah, to Mizpah, both Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan son of Careah, and Seraiah son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite, and Jaazaniah the son of a Maachathite, they and their men.

And it came to pass in the seventh month [that] Ishmael, son of Nethaniah, son of Elishama, of the royal family came, and ten men with him, and he struck and killed Gedaliah, [him] and the Jews and the Chaldeans that were with him in Mizpah.

And Johanan the son of Kareah, and all the leaders of the army that were with him, heard of all the evil deeds which Ishmael had done.

And Johanan, and all the leaders of the army that were with him, took all the remnant of the people, whom he had brought back from Ishmael, mighty men in war, and the women, and the other [property], and the eunuchs, whom they had brought back from Gibeon;

Then all the leaders of the army came, and Johanan, and Azarias the son of Maasaiah, and all the people great and small,

And he called Johanan, and the leaders of the army, and all the people from the least even to the greatest,

that Azariah son of Hoshaiah spoke, and Johanan, the son of Kareah, and all the men who had spoken to Jeremiah, saying, [It is] false! The Lord has not sent you to us, saying, Enter not into Egypt to dwell there.

And Johanan, and all the leaders of the army, took all the remnant of Judah, who had returned to dwell in the land;

And the princes were very angry with Jeremiah, and struck him, and sent him into the house of Jonathan the scribe, for they had turned [his house] into a prison.

Now therefore, my lord the king, let my supplication come before your face; and why do you send me back to the house of Jonathan the scribe? And by no means let me die there.

Then you shall say to them, I brought my supplication before the presence of the king, that he would not send me back into the house of Jonathan, that I should die there.

Zalmon the Ahohite; Maharai the Netophathite;

Ittai the son of Ribai of Gibeah, son of Benjamin the Ephrathite; Asmoth the Bardiamite; Emasu the Salabonite;

The sons of Salma [were] Bethlehem, the Netophathites, Atroth Beth Joab, and half of the family of Malathi, Esari.

Maharai the Netophathite, Heled the son of Baanah the Netophathite,

[Those] who came with Zerubbabel [were]: Jeshua, Nehemiah, Seraiah, Reelaiah, Mordecai, Bilshan, Mispar, Bigvai, Rehum, [and] Baanah. The number of the people of Israel:

the children of Netophah, fifty-six;

The children of Bethlehem, a hundred and twenty-three; the children of Netopha, fifty-six.

And Jair the son of Manasseh took all the country round about Argob as far as the borders of Gargasi and Machathi: he called them by his name Bashan Thavoth Jair, until this day.

ruling from Mount Hermon and from Salcah, and [over] all the land of Bashan to the borders of the Geshurites and the Maachathites, and the half of Gilead of the borders of Sihon king of Heshbon.

And the children of Ammon saw that the people of David were ashamed; and the children of Ammon sent and hired the Syrians of Beth Rehob, and the Syrians of Zoba, and Rehob, twenty thousand footmen, and the king of Amelek with a thousand men, and Ish-Tob with twelve thousand men.

And the children of Ammon went forth, and set the battle in array by the door of the gate. [Those] of Syria- Zobah, Rehob, Ish-Tob, and Amelek, being by themselves in the field.

Eliphelet the son of Ahasbai, the son of the Maachathite; Eliam the son of Ahithophel the Gilonite;

And Caleb's concubine Maachah bore Sheber and Tirhanah.
