But you, O Israel, are My servant Jacob, and he whom I have chosen, the seed of Abraham, whom I have loved;

whom I have taken hold of from the ends of the earth, and from the high places of it I have called you, and said to you, You are My servant; I have chosen you, and I have not forsaken you.

For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, that saves you; I have made Egypt and Ethiopia your ransom, and [have given] Seba for you.

Since you became precious in My sight, you have become glorious, and I have loved you; and I will give men for you, and princes for your life.

Thus says the Lord God that redeems you, the Holy One of Israel; for your sakes I will send to Babylon, and I will stir up all that flee, and the Chaldeans shall be bound in ships.

But now hear, O Jacob My servant; and Israel, whom I have chosen.

And now if you will indeed hear My voice, and keep My covenant, you shall be to Me a peculiar people above all nations; for the whole earth is Mine.

And you shall be to Me a royal priesthood and a holy nation. These words shall you speak to the children of Israel.

Israel is a wandering sheep; the lions have driven him out. The king of Assyria first devoured him, and afterward this king of Babylon [has gnawed] his bones.

And I will restore Israel to his pasture, and he shall feed on Carmel and on Mount Ephraim and in Gilead, and his soul shall be satisfied.

And unless those days were cut short, no flesh would be saved; but for the elect's sake, those days will be cut short.

And unless the Lord had cut short the days, no flesh would be saved; but on account of the elect, whom He chose, He cut short the days.

But it is not as though the word of God has failed. For not all those of Israel [are of] Israel,

What then? Israel has not obtained what it seeks; but the elect have obtained [it], and the rest were blinded.

Thus says the Lord God to My anointed Cyrus, whose right hand I have held, that nations might be obedient before him; and I will break through the strength of kings; I will open doors before him, and cities shall not be closed.

Who bids Cyrus, Be wise, and he shall perform all My will; who says to Jerusalem, You shall be built, and I will lay the foundation of My holy house.

for as I passed by and considered the objects of your worship, I found also an altar on which it had been inscribed: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, [Him] whom being ignorant of you worship, this [One] I announce to you:

But at one time indeed, when you did not know God, you were slaves to those which by nature were not gods.

But now, having known God, or rather, having been known by God, how is it that you turn again to the weak and beggarly elements, to which once again you wish to be slaves?

that at that time you were apart from Christ, being estranged from the commonwealth of Israel and strangers to the covenants of promise, not having hope and atheists in the world.

not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God,
