And I examined whether my heart would excite my flesh as [with] wine, (though my heart guided [me] in wisdom,) and [I desired] to lay hold of mirth, until I should see of what kind is the good to the sons of men, which they should do under the sun all the days of their life.

Hear the end of the matter, the sum: Fear God, and keep His commandments; for this is man's all.

Many say, Who will show us good things? The light of Your countenance, O Lord, has been manifested towards us.

The Lord is the portion of my inheritance and of my cup: You are He that restores my inheritance to me.

But I shall appear in righteousness before Your face: I shall be satisfied when Your glory appears.

He has chosen out His inheritance for us, the beauty of Jacob which He loved. Pause.

The Lord is my portion, says my soul; therefore will I wait for Him.

is good, and shall wait for, and quietly expect salvation from the Lord.

Has it not been told you, O man, what is good? Or what does the Lord require of you, but to do justice, and love mercy, and be ready to walk with the Lord your God?

But it shall not be well with the ungodly, and he shall not prolong his days, [which are but] a shadow; forasmuch as he fears not before God.

Also their love and their hatred and their envy have now perished. Yea, there is no portion for them anymore, forever in all that is done under the sun.

for we are strangers before You, and sojourners, as all our fathers [were]; our days upon the earth [are] as a shadow, and there is no remaining.

(for we are of yesterday, and know nothing; for our life upon the earth is a shadow:)

Or he falls like a flower that has bloomed, and he departs like a shadow, and cannot continue.

Behold, You have made my days old; and my existence [is] as nothing before You; indeed, every man living [is] altogether vanity. Pause.

Surely man walks in a shadow; nay, he is disquieted in vain; he lays up treasures, and knows not for whom he shall gather them.

Remember what my being is; for have You created all the sons of men in vain?

[As for] the days of our years, in them are seventy years; and if [men should be] in strength, eighty years; and the greater part of them would be labor and trouble; for weakness overtakes us, and we shall be chastened.

And [who knows how] to number [his days] because of the fear of Your wrath? So manifest Your right hand, and those that are instructed in wisdom in the heart.

My days have declined like a shadow; and I am withered like grass.

I am removed as a shadow in its going down; I am tossed up and down like locusts.

Man is likened unto vanity: his days pass as a shadow.

[you] who do not know [what will] happen tomorrow. For what is your life? For it will be a vapor that appears for a little [time], but then also disappears.

And I saw that there was no good, but that wherein a man shall rejoice in his works, for it is his portion, for who shall bring him to see anything of that which shall be after him?

For there is no one that knows what is going to be; for who shall tell him how it shall be?

and though his children be multiplied, he knows it not; and if they be few, he is not aware.
