A wise son makes [his] father glad, but a foolish son is a grief to his mother.

A wise son gladdens his father, but a foolish son sneers at his mother.

Son, if your heart is wise, you shall also gladden my heart;

A righteous father brings up [his children] well, and his soul rejoices over a wise son.

Let your father and your mother rejoice over you, and let her that bore you be glad.

Son, be wise, that your heart may rejoice, and remove from yourself reproachful words.

But the angel said to him, "Do not be afraid, Zacharias, because your prayer has been heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear a son to you, and you shall call his name John.

For he shall be great before the Lord, and shall drink neither wine nor strong drink. He will also be filled with the Holy Spirit, while still in his mother's womb.

Remove your way far from her; draw not near to the doors of her house:

For the value of a harlot is as much as of one loaf of bread, and a woman hunts for the precious souls of men.

A poor man loves mirth, loving wine and oil in abundance;

A desirable treasure will rest on the mouth of the wise, but foolish men will swallow it up.

A wise son keeps the law, but he that keeps up debauchery dishonors his father.

He that tills his own land shall be satisfied with bread, but he that follows idleness shall have plenty of poverty.

And not many days after, having gathered together all things, the younger son went on a journey to a distant country, and there wasted his possessions with prodigal living.

But when this son of yours came, who has devoured your livelihood with prostitutes, you slaughtered the fatted calf for him.'
