And Moab said to the elders of Midian, Now shall this assembly lick up all that are round about us, as a calf would lick up the green [herbs] of the field. And Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.

And he sent ambassadors to Balaam the son of Beor, to Pethor, which is on a river of the land of the sons of his people, to call him, saying, Behold, a people have come out of Egypt, and behold, they have covered the face of the earth, and have encamped close to me.

For wrath destroys the foolish one, and envy slays him that has gone astray.

And He increased His people greatly, and made them stronger than their enemies.

And He turned their heart to hate His people, to deal craftily with His servants.

In a populous nation is the glory of a king, but in the failure of people is the ruin of a prince.

Wrath is merciless and anger sharp, but envy can bear nothing.

And I saw all labor, and all the diligent work, that this is a man's envy from his neighbor. This also is vanity and grasping for the wind.

For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, being deceived, being enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

But if you have bitter jealousy and strife in your heart, do not boast and lie against the truth.

For where jealousy and strife [exist], there unrest and every evil deed [are].

Or do you think that the Scripture says in vain, "The Spirit who dwells in us yearns jealously"?
