Go into the midst of the camp of the people, and command the people, saying, Prepare provisions; for yet three days and you shall go over this Jordan, entering in to take possession of the land, which the Lord God of your fathers gives to you.

And they took the provision of the people in their hand, and their horns; and he sent away every man of Israel, each to his tent, and he strengthened the three hundred. And the army of Midian was beneath him in the valley.

How should one pursue a thousand, and two put tens of thousands to flight, if God had not sold them, and the Lord had not delivered them up?

For they and their stock came up, and their tents were with them, as the locust in multitude, and there was no number to them and their camels; and they came to the land of Israel, and laid it waste.

And the Philistines gathered together to war with Israel; and they came up against Israel with thirty thousand chariots, six thousand horsemen, and people as the sand by the seashore in multitude. And they came up, and encamped in Michmash, opposite Beth Aven southward.

And they that went over crossed the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. And Saul was still in Gilgal, and all the people followed after him in amazement.

And Saul sat on the top of the hill under the pomegranate tree that is in Migron, and there were with him about six hundred men.

Be strong and courageous, and fear not, neither be dismayed before the king of Assyria, and before all the nation that [is] with him: for [there are] more with us than with him.

With him [are] arms of flesh, but with us [is] the Lord our God to save [us], and to fight our battle. And the people were encouraged at the words of Hezekiah king of Judah.

I returned, and saw under the sun, that the race is not to the swift, nor the battle to the strong, nor yet bread to the wise, nor yet wealth to men of understanding, nor yet favor to men of knowledge; for time and chance will happen to them all.
