If the guilty one is sentenced to be beaten, the judge is to make him lie face downward and have him whipped. The number of lashes will depend on the crime he has committed.

He may be given as many as forty lashes, but no more; more than that would humiliate him publicly.

Watch out, for there will be those who will arrest you and take you to court, and they will whip you in the synagogues.

"You yourselves must watch out. You will be arrested and taken to court. You will be beaten in the synagogues; you will stand before rulers and kings for my sake to tell them the Good News.
