Lazy people should learn a lesson from the way ants live.

They have no leader, chief, or ruler,

but they store up their food during the summer, getting ready for winter.

How long is the lazy man going to lie around? When is he ever going to get up?

"I'll just take a short nap," he says; "I'll fold my hands and rest a while."

But while he sleeps, poverty will attack him like an armed robber.

Worthless, wicked people go around telling lies.

They wink and make gestures to deceive you,

all the while planning evil in their perverted minds, stirring up trouble everywhere.

Because of this, disaster will strike them without warning, and they will be fatally wounded.

There are seven things that the LORD hates and cannot tolerate: A proud look, a lying tongue, hands that kill innocent people, a mind that thinks up wicked plans, feet that hurry off to do evil, a witness who tells one lie after another, and someone who stirs up trouble among friends.

Then I looked again at all the injustice that goes on in this world. The oppressed were crying, and no one would help them. No one would help them, because their oppressors had power on their side.

I envy those who are dead and gone; they are better off than those who are still alive.

But better off than either are those who have never been born, who have never seen the injustice that goes on in this world.

I have also learned why people work so hard to succeed: it is because they envy the things their neighbors have. But it is useless. It is like chasing the wind.

They say that we would be fools to fold our hands and let ourselves starve to death.

Maybe so, but it is better to have only a little, with peace of mind, than be busy all the time with both hands, trying to catch the wind.

I have noticed something else in life that is useless.

Here is someone who lives alone. He has no son, no brother, yet he is always working, never satisfied with the wealth he has. For whom is he working so hard and denying himself any pleasure? This is useless, too---and a miserable way to live.

Yes, I have seen the wicked buried and in their graves, but on the way back from the cemetery people praise them in the very city where they did their evil. It is useless.

Why do people commit crimes so readily? Because crime is not punished quickly enough.
