Genesis 25:24-34

The time came for her to give birth, and she had twin sons.

The first one was reddish, and his skin was like a hairy robe, so he was named Esau.

The second one was born holding on tightly to the heel of Esau, so he was named Jacob. Isaac was sixty years old when they were born.

The boys grew up, and Esau became a skilled hunter, a man who loved the outdoors, but Jacob was a quiet man who stayed at home.

Isaac preferred Esau, because he enjoyed eating the animals Esau killed, but Rebecca preferred Jacob.

One day while Jacob was cooking some bean soup, Esau came in from hunting. He was hungry

and said to Jacob, "I'm starving; give me some of that red stuff." (That is why he was named Edom. )

Jacob answered, "I will give it to you if you give me your rights as the first-born son."

Esau said, "All right! I am about to die; what good will my rights do me?"

Jacob answered, "First make a vow that you will give me your rights." Esau made the vow and gave his rights to Jacob.

Then Jacob gave him some bread and some of the soup. He ate and drank and then got up and left. That was all Esau cared about his rights as the first-born son.
Genesis 27:35-41

Isaac answered, "Your brother came and deceived me. He has taken away your blessing."

Esau said, "This is the second time that he has cheated me. No wonder his name is Jacob. He took my rights as the first-born son, and now he has taken away my blessing. Haven't you saved a blessing for me?"

Isaac answered, "I have already made him master over you, and I have made all his relatives his slaves. I have given him grain and wine. Now there is nothing that I can do for you, son!"

Esau continued to plead with his father: "Do you have only one blessing, father? Bless me too, father!" He began to cry.

Then Isaac said to him, "No dew from heaven for you, No fertile fields for you.

You will live by your sword, But be your brother's slave. Yet when you rebel, You will break away from his control."

Esau hated Jacob, because his father had given Jacob the blessing. He thought, "The time to mourn my father's death is near; then I will kill Jacob."
Genesis 32:3-7

Jacob sent messengers ahead of him to his brother Esau in the country of Edom.

He instructed them to say: "I, Jacob, your obedient servant, report to my master Esau that I have been staying with Laban and that I have delayed my return until now.

I own cattle, donkeys, sheep, goats, and slaves. I am sending you word, sir, in the hope of gaining your favor."

When the messengers came back to Jacob, they said, "We went to your brother Esau, and he is already on his way to meet you. He has four hundred men with him."

Jacob was frightened and worried. He divided into two groups the people who were with him, and also his sheep, goats, cattle, and camels.
Numbers 20:14-21

Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom. They said, "This message is from your kinsmen, the tribes of Israel. You know the hardships we have suffered,

how our ancestors went to Egypt, where we lived many years. The Egyptians mistreated our ancestors and us,

and we cried to the LORD for help. He heard our cry and sent an angel, who led us out of Egypt. Now we are at Kadesh, a town at the border of your territory.

Please permit us to pass through your land. We and our cattle will not leave the road or go into your fields or vineyards, and we will not drink from your wells. We will stay on the main road until we are out of your territory."

But the Edomites answered, "We refuse to let you pass through our country! If you try, we will march out and attack you."

The people of Israel said, "We will stay on the main road, and if we or our animals drink any of your water, we will pay for it---all we want is to pass through."
20
The Edomites repeated, "We refuse!" and they marched out with a powerful army to attack the people of Israel.

Because the Edomites would not let the Israelites pass through their territory, the Israelites turned and went another way.
Deuteronomy 23:7
"Do not despise the Edomites; they are your relatives. And do not despise the Egyptians; you once lived in their land.

Isaiah 63:1
"Who is this coming from the city of Bozrah in Edom? Who is this so splendidly dressed in red, marching along in power and strength?" It is the LORD, powerful to save, coming to announce his victory.

The Sovereign LORD said, "The people of Edom took cruel revenge on Judah, and that revenge has brought lasting guilt on Edom.
